2 cocktail glasses

Fill a cocktail pitcher with ice and add the whiskey, dry vermouth, sweet vermouth, and bitters. Stir vigorously until the outside of the pitcher is thoroughly beaded with sweat and is extremely cold to the touch.

Strain into the cocktail glasses. Twist a lemon twist over each drink, drop it in, and serve immediately.

Mint Julep

Makes two 2½-ounce drinks

Juleps inspire many arguments about the correct way to make them and, of course, whether it was Virginians or Kentuckians who created them. Regardless of the answers to these worthy debates, the julep remains a lovely predinner drink.

6 fresh mint sprigs

1 ounce Simple Syrup or 2 teaspoons sugar

Crushed ice for serving

4 ounces bourbon
